Bobby McFerrin - Ave Maria
etc.
“As
musicians, we transcend technique in order to seek out the truths in our world
in a way that gives meaning and sustenance to individuals and communities. That’s
art for life’s sake.” ~ Yo-Yo
Ma

“To
me, just being is a religious experience. Just being is holy.”
“I
always felt that artists have a huge responsibility because culture looks at
them as a way of interpreting what’s going on. So I think it’s important for artists
to be redeeming, to offer things that are redeeming, things that will lift people,
encourage them. So you do have to be careful with what you say, with what the
material is, because there is a lot of material out there that... bleeds
violence.”
McFerrin
says that one of his job descriptions as an artist is moving people to joy. “If
there’s any one thing I want it’s for people to have that sense of joy, the joy
that I feel just being able to sing.”
“Music
has a way of communicating … that language does not. It can go past language.”
He
frequently works with young people, trying to help them see the power of music.
It’s a lesson his mother taught him when he was a boy. “She knew how music was
a healing balm because whenever I was sick she’d give me two things: she’d give
me medicine for my aches and pains and she’d give me music for my spirit,” he
recalls. “Music does have incredible power to rearrange your insides, rearrange
your thoughts, and heal your body. Music is about transformation and
transcendance.”
